Overall, this book is a very good work, and is particularly noteworthy for its description of racism and elements relating to 1930s. This book’s themes are racism, accepting responsibility, and romantic relationship. The novel depicts an interracial love story in 1930s Texas, up to the 1937 New London School explosion. How Naomi deals with the open racism in the area as well as with her relationship with her step-father and her romantic relationship with Washington Fuller are major elements of the novel. Naomi becomes romantically involved with a young African-American boy, Washington Fuller. In her new living situation, Naomi takes responsibility for watching over her two younger step-siblings, Cari and Beto. ![]() The protagonist is 17-year-old Naomi Vargas, a Mexican-American who moves to New London in order to live with her step-father, Henry, who had previously abused her but recently reformed through religion and is trying to make amends for his past conduct. ![]() ![]() history – and then focuses on fictional events leading up to the explosion.
